SUPER BLOCK
Barcelona, Spain
Individual Work
Barcelona, a city with a distinctive urban fabric, was chosen as the experimental base to test urban design principles at different design scales and objectives.
To address the challenges posed by continuous population
growth, the project explores two approaches: 1. Infill Development: Inserting new block fragments into the existing urban grid. 2. Bold Expansion: Introducing innovative layouts in newly developed areas while respecting key existing urban char acteristics, such as grid plans, street dimensions, and facade scales.
The latter approach embraces more radical rethinking of foundational urban elements, including the relationship between streets and buildings and the design and ownership of public spaces. However, it maintains a humble attitude toward preserving essential urban components. A key focus of this exploration is balancing new and old urban design rules to create a cohesive yet forward-thinking vision for the city’s future.
